The reputation of the old Mercedes E-Class had long been scratched. But the problems that have arisen, especially with the electronics, can hardly be found in used vehicles.

Hardly any other car has enjoyed such a good reputation over many years as the Mercedes E-Class: The originally medium-sized series from the Stuttgart manufacturer stood for the best workmanship, high quality and unrestricted cross-country qualities. With the introduction of

the new model generation of the E-Class after the turn of the millennium, however, the good reputation began to crack. According to the ADAC in Munich, massive problems arose especially in the early days that nobody would have expected from a car of this class.

Especially electronics prone

According to the ADAC, the defects of the E-Class, which are also recorded in the breakdown statistics, mainly concern things in the electronics and electrics sector. Especially in the first few years, the numerous electrical consumers repeatedly led to discharged batteries. In addition, small errors could ensure that the electronics switched to an emergency program for the engine. Cases have also become known in which the engine was simply switched off.

However, the headline failures of the electro-hydraulic braking system were rather rare. Over time, however, the deficiencies were remedied during visits to the workshop or during a recall campaign. Vehicles where appropriate measures have been taken are once again considered to be very reliable.

The relevant generation of the E-Class was presented in 2002. The station wagon version followed in 2003. In 2006 the E-Class received a major facelift. The vehicles are generally praised for their decent amount of space, pleasant suspension and safe driving characteristics. In addition to the defects mentioned, the E-Class also received criticism for a rather low permitted payload.

Diverse range of engines

On the engine side, there is diversity in the E-Class. In addition, there was also a change in the construction principle. Because in 2005 a new generation of V6 engines was launched. Depending on the year of construction and model, the power of the petrol engine is between 120 kW / 163 PS and 285 kW / 387 PS, with the exception of the particularly powerful E 55 AMG with 350 kW / 476 PS. The diesel engine ranges from 90 kW / 122 PS to an eight-cylinder engine and 231 kW / 314 PS.

Despite the scratched image, the E-Class is still quite stable in value. According to the Schwacke list, an E 200 Supercharger Classic from 2002 is available for around 17,600 euros, an eight-cylinder diesel E 400 CDI Avantgarde from 2005 should be available for a good 42,000 euros. An E 240 T Avantgarde station wagon from 2004 costs a good 27,000 euros. (dpa)
