The federal government and the federal states reacted with criticism to the postponement of the decision of the GM board of directors. The Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Kurt Beck criticized the behavior of the Americans as completely unacceptable.
The Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, Kurt Beck (SPD), criticized the postponement of the decision on the future of the car manufacturer Opel by the board of directors of the ex-parent company General Motors (GM) as “completely unacceptable”. According to a statement on Saturday, the head of government and his economics minister Hendrik Hering (SPD) demanded direct intervention by Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) in favor of Opel. The car manufacturer also has a plant in Kaiserslautern.
Criticism of GM
"Those who have led Opel into the crisis and are dependent on public aid worth billions of dollars to rescue the company are now ensuring that the hangover is extended," complained Beck and Hering. This tactic cannot be justified by any facts. Both politicians called on Merkel to press for a top-level discussion that had already been requested by Rhineland-Palatinate several times.
Hering again emphasized that a vote for the Canadian-Austrian auto supplier Magna was overdue. This has a strategic concept, its own management and, with its Russian partners, the perspective of the growth market Russia. The uncertainty about the future of Opel must be ended as soon as possible, demanded Beck and Hering.
Cook upset
The Hessian Prime Minister Roland Koch (CDU) is “extremely angry” about the postponement of the decision on the future of the car manufacturer Opel by the board of directors of the ex-parent company General Motors (GM). "All factual questions have been clarified between GM and Magna, there is no substantive justification for this postponement," said Koch on Saturday according to a message in Wiesbaden.
In view of the financial commitment of the federal and state governments, GM should not have false expectations. This applies in particular to the conditions of a guarantee. “Respect for the willingness of the taxpayer to participate in a rescue through surety demands clear and tough conditions for every surety recipient, and that also and especially applies to GM. There's no extra sausage,”said Koch. (dpa)
