Staying in a car offers protection from a thunderstorm. Even in a convertible with a fabric roof, lightning is diverted if it hits the ground. Nevertheless, drivers should observe a few rules.
A convertible behaves like other types of vehicle in the event of a lightning strike - as long as the fabric or steel roof is completely closed. The usual metal stiffeners in the top form a sheet metal unit with the body, this so-called “Faraday cage” conducts lightning. Windows and sunroofs must always be closed in all vehicles, and the antenna must also be retracted if possible.
Do not use cell phone
During a thunderstorm, it is advisable to park in a place no higher than the surrounding area. You can wait there until the storm has cleared. The cell phone should not be used unless it is absolutely necessary. You should also refrain from using the car radio. Metal parts connected to the body in the interior may not touch the occupants, but such places are usually not accessible through the usual plastic lining.
In the event of one of those rare lightning strikes in a car, keep calm. The brightness and bang frighten the passengers on board, but nothing can happen. Only the car itself is sometimes damaged, which is why a subsequent inspection visit to a specialist is necessary.
Lightning protection in the mobile home
However, caution is advised in a motorhome. The roof may be partially made of plastic, which breaks the safe Faraday cage. For optimal lightning protection, metal frames and struts that are connected to the body should be incorporated at this point. According to ADAC, lightning can then be conducted safely to earth. If this is not the case, the occupants should not put their heads into the area of the roof. It is safest to stay in the driver's cab. (mid)
