The wintry weather in January increased the number of accidents a little. The accidents themselves were usually mild and resulted in fewer victims.

According to preliminary results from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 281 road users were killed in accidents in January 2009, 20 percent or 72 people fewer than in January 2008. In the first month of the year, the police recorded around 190,800 road traffic accidents, 7.6 percent more than in the corresponding month of the previous year.

Less personal injury

This increase is mainly due to property damage accidents, which rose by 10.4 percent to 171,400. In contrast, there were 12.4 percent fewer accidents with personal injury (19,400). The number of injuries has also decreased by 11 percent to 25,100. The reason for this accident development was probably the cold winter weather in January.

More traffic fatalities in the Anhalt area

In most federal states, fewer people died in road accidents in January 2009 than in the previous year. In Baden-Württemberg there were 16 fewer road deaths than in January 2008, in North Rhine-Westphalia there were 15, in Bavaria and Hesse eleven fewer. In contrast, more people died on the streets in Saxony-Anhalt (plus six people) and in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (plus one person) than in the same month last year. (AG)
