Special retrofit filters from Bosal do not receive an operating permit. Consumers have the right to exchange or upgrade.
Retrofit particle filters from Bosal failed a follow-up inspection ordered by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). The authorities in Flensburg announced on Monday that the values determined by TÜV Nord during the test did not meet the requirements that are the basis for issuing a general operating permit. Particle reduction systems with ABE number 17097 are affected.
GAT withdraws
Investigations into retrofit particle filters from GAT are still ongoing, according to the KBA. The products of both companies were criticized after various comparative tests. Environmentalists had questioned the filter effect of the retrofit systems, whereupon the Federal Office ordered the functional test.
According to KBA spokesman Stephan Immen, the manufacturer concerned now has the right to be heard and to improve its filter systems. As an alternative to making repairs, he can also withdraw the filters himself. The GAT company in Gladbeck decided to take this step last week. Regardless of the ongoing review, GAT had the ABE numbers 17114, 17117, 17118, 17070 and 17148 deleted for its retrofit filters. If the manufacturer does not react, Stephan Immen says the KBA can revoke the ABE.
Bosal a little "surprised"
According to spokesman Ralf Meisel, Bosal in Viersen wants to wait for a conversation with the KBA before further reactions. "We're a bit in the air," said Meisel. The results are a little "surprised", as the KBA initially communicated other results to the company. The affected filter systems will continue to be sold until further notice.
Meisel estimates that a total of almost 9,000 Bosal filters have been installed so far. According to estimates by the Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) in Berlin, GAT installed around 60,000 systems.
Right to expansion or replacement
However, consumers have the right to upgrade or exchange. "If filters are defective, the customer can request a repair from his workshop," says ADAC lawyer Silvia Schattenkirchner. Since an ineffective filter can hardly be improved, all that remains is to install a functioning filter from another manufacturer.
Alternatively, customers could request that the filter be removed and their vehicle returned to its original condition. "But you don't have to get involved in paying extra for an exchange," said Schattenkirchner. (dpa)
