Volkswagen is positioned in Malaysia. In a year's time, models from the Passat series will initially be produced there, followed by the Jetta.
Europe's largest car manufacturer Volkswagen (VW) will in future also manufacture cars in Malaysia. From the end of 2011, the Passat will be assembled for the local market, as the company announced on Tuesday. An existing DRB Hicon plant in Pekan will be used for this purpose. The contract now signed is based on a preliminary agreement from August 2010.
Jetta will follow from the end of 2012
A second expansion stage, which includes the Jetta model, is to follow from the end of 2012. Initially, the assembly of several thousand vehicles annually from delivered parts (CKD method) is planned. "Developing the market potential of the ASEAN region is very important to the Volkswagen Group's long-term growth strategy," said Christian Klingler, Member of the Board of Management for Sales.
According to the information, DRB Hicom has the largest production network in Malaysia and, in addition to passenger cars, also builds commercial vehicles at the Pekan and Melaka locations.
