The Rüsselsheim-based car manufacturer Opel may cut 500 jobs in transmission production. In addition, there should be further rationalization measures.

The works council of the Opel factory in Bochum fears up to 500 additional jobs in the transmission production. "We expect a decision this year," said the works council chairman of the Bochum Opel plant, Rainer Einenkel, on Wednesday. The background is plans by General Motors (GM) to replace the F13 type gearbox built in Bochum with another gearbox in the future. "A decision in this direction would mean the end of Plant II in Bochum from 2011/2012", fears Einenkel.

170 jobs are lost

A company spokesman emphasized in Rüsselsheim that no decision had yet been made about the future of gear manufacturing. It remains to be seen whether jobs will actually be lost. For example, other transmissions could also be built in Bochum in the future, it said.

Regardless of the decision on the future of gearbox production, 170 of the currently 670 employees are planned to be cut in this area by 2010. In car production, too, further rationalization measures are planned to cut another 1,000 to 1,200 employees by 2010. However, business-related layoffs are excluded, said Einenkel. The works council is confident that it will be able to accommodate the affected employees at supplier companies in the region.

There are currently around 6300 employees at Opel in Bochum. 4,400 of them work directly in car production. The Astra and Zafira models are produced in Bochum. (dpa)
