Martin Winterkorn wants to keep his job as VW boss until at least 2016. He described the reports about the departure of Supervisory Board Ferdinand Piech as shabby.
Martin Winterkorn wants to remain head of Europe's largest car manufacturer Volkswagen until at least 2016. "My contract runs until 2016. I plan to at least fulfill it," said the 66-year-old of the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung". According to the report, he described the latest speculations about Winterkorn's move to the supervisory board as successor to the 76-year-old VW patriarch Ferdinand Piëch as shabby. The Piëch / Winterkorn team will remain VW "for many years to come". Now the company must calm down, demanded Winterkorn.
Piech denied the report
The "Handelsblatt" had repeatedly reported, citing confidants of the VW supervisory board boss and corporate circles, that Piëch would resign for health reasons in the next few months and that VW boss Winterkorn would become the new chief controller. The Wolfsburg and Piëch themselves denied immediately and clearly. At the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Piëch also let journalists know a few days ago: "I'm fine."
According to the FAS, Winterkorn also affirmed: "Anyone who speculates about an alleged illness is acting irresponsibly. You simply don't do that. Especially since none of it is true: Anyone who met him at the IAA could experience an extremely fit Dr. Piëch." The Austrian headed VW himself between 1993 and 2002 as the boss and is considered the center of power in Germany's largest industrial group. His family line Porsche / Piëch is the largest VW owner.
In an interview with "Wirtschaftswoche", Winterkorn also emphasized the need for savings due to the slump in sales on the European car market. In future, orders should only be given to external service providers to a greatly reduced extent and should instead be processed with our own staff. CFO Hans Dieter Pötsch recently announced that work would be done on internal processes and structures. (dpa)
