On Monday morning, car production in the Opel plant in Bochum was suspended. The employees affected by the closure of the plant demand clarity about the processing modalities.

Around 1000 Opel employees from Bochum asked for more information about the planned plant closure at the end of 2014 on Monday. "We expect Opel to finally create clarity for the people and the region and provide acceptable answers," said the district manager of IG Metall NRW, Knut Giesler. Around 3,300 Opel employees are affected by the plant closure. Because of the demonstration, car production at the plant has been suspended since 11 a.m., according to the union.

Negotiations between Opel and the union

Since the morning the union and Opel have been negotiating a social wage agreement to cushion the closure of the plant. So far there have only been cornerstones approved by both sides, but no collective agreement.

The cornerstones provide for severance payments, transfer offers and the increase in the Opel spare parts warehouse in Bochum by 265 to 700 positions at the location. In addition, 100 industrial replacement jobs are to be created. (dpa)
