The conversation serves the "current information". An Opel spokesman also confirmed a corresponding report by the "Handelsblatt" to the German press agency dpa. The European boss of the Opel parent company General Motors (GM), Carl-Peter Forster, Opel boss Hans Demant and works council chief Klaus Franz are expected at the meeting. Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) does not take part in the conversation.

Guarantee as a precaution

According to the Opel spokesman, the company representatives also meet with the prime ministers of the countries in which the car manufacturer has locations. The background discussions with the heads of government from Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia deal with the overall economic situation and a future-proof business plan.

In the afternoon, the Opel representatives also want to meet the new Federal Minister of Economics, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg (CSU). The Opel management has been trying for months to obtain state guarantees of up to 1.8 billion euros. GM Europe described the request for a guarantee as a precautionary measure in the event that GM had to file for bankruptcy in the US and its mother's cash flow dried up.
