Correct ventilation saves a lot of fuel when driving a car. TÜV Süd advises against continuously running air conditioning systems as well as from open windows.

If you follow a few tips when ventilating and using the air conditioning, drivers can save quite a bit of fuel in summer. According to the TÜV Süd in Munich, a car heated by the sun should first be well ventilated before driving off. To do this, the doors and sunroof are opened so that the greatest heat can escape. After the journey has started, the windows are closed and the air conditioning is set to full power and circulating air. When the desired temperature is reached after a few minutes, the system is switched back to fresh air supply and moderate fan power.

«Nonsensical» continuous operation

On the other hand, the experts are not advised to operate the air conditioning system continuously - this is associated with considerable additional consumption. It is also “nonsensical” to drive with the window open all the time: On the one hand, this means that the interior air cooled by the air conditioning escapes outside again. On the other hand, open windows generate air turbulence which deteriorates the aerodynamic properties of the vehicle. The higher air resistance generated in this way, in turn, increases fuel consumption. (dpa / gms)
