The Bavarian car company BMW had to accept falling sales figures last month. Only one brand could make a profit.
The successful car manufacturer BMW has suffered the first drop in sales in two and a half years. In July, the number of deliveries of BMW, Rolls-Royce and Mini cars fell by 7.7 percent to 102,452 vehicles, BMW AG announced on Monday in Munich. As a reason, the group referred, among other things, to a strong month in the previous year and an upcoming model change. A new sales record is still planned for the year as a whole. The last time BMW reported falling sales on a monthly basis was in January 2004.
Also expected to fall in sales in August
Thanks to a good first half of the year, group sales rose by 5.7 percent to 800,931 deliveries in the first seven months of 2006. The outgoing CEO Helmut Panke had already announced a slowdown in the second half of the year. According to a spokesman, a decline in sales is also to be expected in August. On the one hand, an unusually high growth of 23 percent was recorded in the same month last year, and the new 3 Series Coupé, for example, will not be available until September.
In July, sales of the core brand BMW also fell by 7.7 percent to 86,597 sales. As expected, sales of the expiring 3 Series Coupé fell by more than half to a good 1080 deliveries, it said. There were also drops in sales on the off-road X3 and X5. A revised version of the X3 will be released in September, and according to industry speculation, the new X5 will be launched in the USA at the end of the year. In the first seven months, sales of the BMW brand rose by 8.2 percent to 683,724 cars sold.
The expansion of the plant in Oxford, which at times led to production stoppages, continues to have an impact on the Mini. In July, sales also fell by 7.7 percent to 15,804 vehicles. In the first seven months, sales fell 6.7 percent to 116,869 cars. Only the luxury brand Rolls-Royce was able to grow in July and so far this year. However, even after a sales increase of 2.4 percent to 338 sales in the first seven months, the brand is still a long way from its original goals.
