VW is launching a new generation of the Polo. A particularly economical diesel and the GTI version are planned for the coming year.

VW will start delivering the new Polo at the end of June. The basic version of the small car costs almost unchanged at 12,885 euros, as announced by the manufacturer in Wolfsburg. In addition to four airbags, ESP anti-skid protection is now standard equipment. The three-door car, which is around 700 euros cheaper, is to follow at the International Motor Show (IAA, September 17th to 27th) in Frankfurt / Main. According to a spokesman, a particularly economical diesel and a new Polo GTI are also planned later.

Four petrol, three diesel

The Polo, which has grown to 3.97 meters in length and 1.68 meters in width, will start with four petrol and three diesels. The units cover a performance range from 44 kW / 60 PS to 77 kW / 105. The Polo 1.2 TSI is the fastest model in the series with a speed of 190 km / h. The 55 kW / 75 PS strong 1.6 TDI is satisfied as the most economical representative with 4.2 liters (CO2 emissions: 109 g / km). A so-called Blue Motion package will also be available in the summer for the 66 kW / 90 PS diesel. With an automatic start-stop system, smooth-running tires, optimized aerodynamics and a longer geared transmission, consumption should drop to 3.6 liters (96 g / km).

At the turn of the year, VW is also planning to introduce another economy model, in which a new three-cylinder with a displacement of 1.2 liters and 55 kW / 75 PS will be used. It should then only consume 3.2 liters (87 g / km). At the same time, VW is planning a new Polo GTI for summer 2010. A 1.4 liter TSI engine is planned, which is valued at 125 kW / 170 PS to 132 kW / 180 PS. As in the Golf GTI, there is also an electronic differential lock in the small offshoot for better traction.

The VW spokesman left it open whether there will be more Polo variants in the course of the model cycle. A new edition of the cross-polo, trimmed in the direction of an off-road vehicle, is quite conceivable in view of its great success. A notchback sedan or a small station wagon, on the other hand, are unlikely, at least for the European market. (dpa / tmn)
