Over the years, the VW Polo has almost assumed the size of a Golf. But the list of shortcomings also kept growing.
The automotive world went through a remarkable development in the years before the crisis. This not only applies to technical innovations, also in terms of vehicle size hardly anything has remained the same. Almost every known model family grew beyond its former dimensions. A VW Polo is still considered a smaller alternative to the compact Golf. But that's only because the Golf itself has gotten bigger and bigger, while the Polo now comes close to the dimensions of earlier Golf models. However, the appearance of the Polo in the breakdown statistics of the ADAC does not seem really progressive - because there are some quirks listed there.
Performed below average
The Polo generation built since 2001 with the internal name Type 9N has been comprehensively renewed compared to its predecessor. However, according to the club, only further improvements in the 2004 model year led to a noticeable reduction in the frequency of breakdowns and defects. In the main inspections, however, the new models score below average. The many deficiencies recorded in the statistics include defective brake light switches up to 2003 or defective lambda probes in gasoline engines up to 2006. There were recalls in 2004 because of leaking diesel tandem pumps and in 2007 because of short circuits in the seat heating.
The Polo, introduced in 2001, followed its predecessor, which had been built since 1994. In 2004, the Polo Fun was added with body parts in off-road style. The Polo received a facelift in 2005, and from 2006 the Cross Polo continued the design line started with the Fun model. In June 2009, this generation of Polo will be replaced by the new model presented in spring.
From 4750 euros
A petrol engine with 40 kW / 55 PS is the entry-level engine in the fourth-generation Polo. Sportier natures can also find a GTI version with 110 kW / 150 PS. The so-called Cup Edition even has an output of 132 kW / 180 PS. Diesel is available with 47 kW / 64 PS to 96 kW / 130 PS.
According to the Schwacke list, a used Polo 1.2 from 2001 costs 4750 euros today. A Polo 1.8 GTI from 2006 is available for around 12,000 euros, a diesel model Polo 1.4 TDI Sportline from the same year is sold for 10,000 euros. (dpa / tmn)
