BMW reports brilliant business from the Asian region. The Munich-based company in Asia see Toyota's luxury brand Lexus at best "as a competitor in certain markets".

The car manufacturer BMW reached its sales targets in Asia earlier than planned. Originally, a total of 150,000 cars were only sold in the region in 2008. "We have already achieved this goal this year," said the new Chief Sales Officer Stefan Krause on Wednesday at the Tokyo Motor Show. In the first nine months, particularly strong growth rates were achieved in the growth markets.

Maintained leading position

In the Chinese markets, sales rose by 32 percent. In Korea they maintained their leading position in the premium segment with an increase of 21 percent. In India they want to sell more than the planned 1000 vehicles. Japan is still the largest market in Asia, said Krause. Here over 44,000 BMW, Mini and Rolls Royce had been sold by the end of September, a decrease of three percent in the currently weak Japanese market.

The Munich-based company wants to increase its sales outlets in Japan to 196 for BMW and 100 for Mini. Because the Japanese premium market offers great growth potential; only four percent of the car market can be assigned to the premium sector. In Germany, however, it is 30 percent. Toyota's luxury brand Lexus is currently not afraid of BMW. Lexus may be a competitor in certain markets, said Krause, but not worldwide.
