Nissan will launch its Leaf electric car in Europe by the end of the year. After deducting local subsidies, the price should be less than 30,000 euros.

The first examples of the Nissan Leaf electric vehicle are expected to go on sale in Europe at the turn of the year. The Japanese manufacturer announced this on Monday in London. After deducting local subsidies, the prices should in some cases start well below 30,000 euros - and thus be at the level of a comparable model with diesel or hybrid drive.

Start in countries with funding

The car will initially start in those countries where electric vehicles are particularly encouraged. That's why customers in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and Portugal will be the first. All other countries in Western Europe will be supplied by the end of 2011 at the latest. According to Nissan, the five-seater is powered by an electric motor with around 80 kW / 109 PS. Equipped with lithium-ion batteries and a braking system that turns into a generator when decelerating and charges the battery, the range should be more than 160 kilometers. With a special charging system, 80 percent of the battery power can then be charged in just 30 minutes, according to Nissan. The charging process takes about eight hours at a conventional socket.

For clean propulsion, there are new technologies that are designed for minimum consumption and maximum range: The Leaf saves electricity by using LED lights. A new navigation and communication system informs the driver about range, battery power and the nearest charging stations. If desired, the Leaf can also be air-conditioned remotely with the mobile phone while it is still connected to the socket. (dpa / tmn)
