For the first time in its long history, the Golf GTI is getting an open version. The 210 hp convertible should come on the market just in time for the summer.
The VW Golf GTI is taking off: for the first time in its history, the sporty compact is also available as a convertible. The open four-seater with a fabric hood will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show (March 8th to 18th), and it is expected to arrive at dealers in time for the summer season.
Sprint with VW Golf GTI Convertible takes longer
As with the closed version, the convertible also uses the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo gasoline engine with 155 kW / 210 hp. The maximum torque of 280 Nm is available over a wide speed range and is transmitted to the front wheels via a manual six-speed gearbox. Alternatively, a double clutch transmission with six gears is available. A standard electronic transverse differential lock should ensure good traction in the curve.
In terms of performance, however, the convertible lags slightly behind the lighter sedan. The sprint from zero to 100 km / h takes 7.3 seconds, 0.4 seconds longer than the closed version, and the top speed is 237 km / h instead of 240 km / h. The consumption, however, increases by 0.3 liters to 7.6 liters for the manual version.
Soft top adopted from other VW models

Externally, the convertible bears the familiar GTI insignia. The honeycomb grille is edged in red, there are enlarged air inlets in the bumper, and a diffuser at the rear provides downforce. Inside there is the typical checked fabric, aluminum pedals and red decorative stitching on the leather steering wheel. The soft top was taken over 1: 1 from the other convertible versions. It opens in 9.5 seconds and is also closed again when requested eleven seconds later. The trunk offers a storage volume of 250 liters.
The equipment of the GTI convertible includes automatic climate control, CD radio, 17-inch rims and five airbags. The prices should start at around 30,500 euros. The competitors include the Audi A3 Cabrio 2.0 TFSI (32,600 euros) and the BMW 125i Cabrio (37,500 euros). (SP-X)
