The driver's license has not lost its popularity among young adults. The number of driving license graduates is increasing both in cities and in rural areas.

The German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) contradicts the assumption that the car is becoming less important, especially among young adults in the city. The statisticians examined the number of driving licenses from 2008 to 2010 in the age group of 20 to 25 year olds.

Continuous increase in driving license graduates

In 2008, 35,904 young people got their driving license in cities. That was 2.3 percent of the population of that age. In rural areas it was significantly more at 62,969 in absolute terms, and a little less in percentage terms at 1.9 percent. Since then, the number of driver's license graduates in this age group has increased both in the city and in the countryside. In 2010, 41,770 young city dwellers passed the driving test (2.5 percent), and 69,007 young people (2.1 percent) between the ages of 20 and 25 received their driving license in rural regions.

"Beyond the regional differences, both the absolute number of first-time licenses and the percentage of first-time licenses are increasing in this age cohort. As a result, there is no downward trend in driving license acquisition," judges the KBA in its annual report. (SP-X)
