Audi is sending the third generation of the A3 into the race. The compact class has got new engines and can be upgraded like an A8.
The new Audi A3 is ready to go: the Bavarian manufacturer unveiled the third generation of the compact class model at the Geneva Motor Show (open to the public: March 8th to 18th). The car should go on sale in the summer. According to Audi, the car will initially only be available as a three-door. The five-door Sportback, a new convertible and, for the first time, a compact notchback sedan will follow. Audi has not yet announced the starting price. But if the entry-level engine is available at the end of the year, the A3 will be available from 21,600 euros.
The new Audi A3 weighs 80 kilograms less than its predecessor
Like its predecessor, the new model is 4.24 meters long, but has a wheelbase stretched to 2.60 meters. That makes the proportions look sportier and creates more space in the interior, explains Audi. Nevertheless, the car should weigh up to 80 kilograms less than before, among other things because of the fenders and an aluminum hood.
In addition to the new range of engines, this is one of the reasons that consumption has fallen by an average of twelve percent and that the most economical model with a standard consumption of 3.8 liters of diesel is on the list (CO2 emissions: 99 g / km). Apart from gasoline and compression-ignition engines, versions with natural gas and hybrid drives are planned.
Two new petrol and one diesel for the Audi A3

The A3 will initially start with two petrol and one diesel. All engines are four-cylinder direct injection and have been newly developed. The preliminary basic model will be a 1.4 liter TFSI with 90 kW / 122 PS. A 2.0-liter TDI with 105 kW / 143 PS and a 1.8-liter petrol engine with 132 kW / 180 PS rank above this. This enables speeds of up to 232 km / h. Later, in addition to all-wheel drive variants, other engines followed, including a unit with 1.4 liter displacement and cylinder deactivation.
There will be plenty of infotainment and assistance systems for the new A3: For a surcharge, customers can equip the compact one almost as well as the flagship A8. The highlights include an electrically extendable flat screen for on-board computer, navigation and internet browser as well as a touch-sensitive rotary knob on the center console. The Bavarians have integrated a touchpad into it, which can read the driver's handwriting for easier input of navigation destinations, for example.
