From spring 2012, Peugeot will offer the 208 from 11,600 euros. The small car has become lighter and smaller than its predecessor.

Peugeot stops the weight spiral. The new small car 208, which will be available from spring, is lighter and smaller than its predecessor 207, which will be available as a special "Forever" model at the end of the day. And the French are also stopping the usual upward trend in terms of price: At 11,600 euros, the entry-level version is 750 euros cheaper than the cheapest version of the previous 207 model.

Peugeot 208 as three and five door models

The new edition of the five-seater, available with three or five doors, measures just under four meters. The shrinkage is only at the expense of the body overhangs front and rear, the wheelbase remains unchanged. Thanks to a new type of seating architecture, the space available for the passengers is to increase significantly. For example, the knee room at the back increases by an impressive five centimeters. The weight loss results mainly from the use of high-strength steel, which is lighter and more stable than ordinary types of steel. Up to 173 kilograms should have been saved depending on the engine version. In the lightest version, the 208 at 975 kilograms even undercuts the one-ton limit.

Outwardly, the little Frenchman relies on elegance. The low-hanging grille, the crescent-shaped bead on the bonnet and the elongated lights take up the style that was introduced in the mid-range model 508 and replaces the polarizing shark-mouth design of the older models. In the interior, the focus is on ergonomics; The speedometer and tachometer are placed comparatively high so that the driver does not have to distract his gaze from the road. The relatively small steering wheel should convey handiness and dynamism.

A new generation of three-cylinder engines is used under the short bonnet. The entry-level version with a displacement of one liter and 50 kW / 68 PS should get by with 4.3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (99 grams of CO2 / km). The 1.2-liter variant with 60 kW / 82 PS should only approve a little more. The petrol range is supplemented by three engines with up to 115 kW / 156 hp in the 1.6-liter turbo version, already familiar from the predecessor. The vacuum cleaners are powered by manual five-speed gears, the turbo has six gears.

There are no start-stop systems for gasoline engines. The fuel-saving technology is reserved for the diesels and wrestles a consumption of around 3.3 liters (98 grams CO2 / km) from the most frugal variant with 50 kW / 68 PS from 1.4 liter displacement in connection with low-friction tires. Alternatively, the same engine is available without a traffic light stop assistant; there are also two 1.6-liter diesels with 68 kW / 92 hp and 84 kW / 115 hp.

The equipment includes, among other things, six airbags and ESP anti-skid protection as standard. A panoramic glass roof, cruise control and, for the first time, an independently maneuvering parking assistant are available for a surcharge.

There is also a special model with extensive equipment for the market launch. The "Ice Velvet" edition, for example, has two-zone automatic air conditioning, 17 inch rims and a navigation system. The prices for this start at 21,500 euros. The main competitors of the 208 include Renault Clio, Opel Corsa and Ford Fiesta. (SP-X)
