Customers can again expect higher discounts when buying a car. According to a recent study, this is due to the risks in the financial markets.
According to a study, there are again larger discounts on the German car market. From the point of view of the Duisburg car professor Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, this is an indication that the risks in the financial markets are having their first effects on the real economy. "In August the discount level reached the previous year's level again. In 2010, the worst German car market since reunification was due to the scrappage bonus," he wrote in the analysis presented by his institute at the University of Duisburg-Essen on Tuesday. Last August, for example, importers brought 18 models onto the market with discounts of more than 25 percent.
Car market more fragile than new registrations
The domestic carmakers also consumed the cushion of bulging order books and the good sales of the previous months. "The car market is weaker than the official registration data show," says the study. The larger discounts already reflected "the high economic risks of the sovereign debt crises, significantly declining economic growth for 2012 and poor prospects for the European auto business".
Dudenhöffer said: "The German car market is much more fragile than the new car registrations show." The confidence widespread in the industry ahead of the IAA auto show in Frankfurt next week cannot hide this. In April, new car buyers had to be prepared for a significantly lower discount level. You could count on an average price reduction of 10.5 percent.
According to the CAR statistics, the undisputed king of discounts is the Fiat Panda, which is currently available in the "MyLife" equipment line for 7690 euros, or 34.9 percent below the list price. This corresponds to a customer benefit of 4,120 euros. (AG / dpa)
