The ADAC has tested 65 rest areas across Europe. The result: the operators are doing too little for families and the disabled. Wheelchair users in particular would have problems with the payment barriers at the sanitary facilities.

In its Europe-wide test of 65 rest areas in 13 countries, the ADAC found that the operators are doing too little for families and the disabled. As the automobile club announced on Thursday, when comparing different countries, children are in good hands at rest stops in Switzerland, Germany and Croatia. On the other hand, things are not as good in other countries as being family-friendly: in Spain there are almost no playgrounds and play areas, in the neighboring country of the Czech Republic the testers criticized the lack of changing facilities.

Lack of family friendliness

The testers also criticized the fact that many rest stops did not cater to the needs of the disabled. The payment barriers in front of the sanitary facilities are an obstacle, especially for wheelchair users. "In the Netherlands these had to be laboriously dismantled by the staff in order to gain access to the disabled toilet", stated the ADAC.

At least when it comes to paying, things look more positive at the toilets. Because at the rest stops as well as at the truck stops you would get your toilet fee back if you shop in the attached shop or restaurant. The ADAC criticized the fact that in German rest stops with Sanifair toilets, the same procedure would cost 20 cents per toilet visit. The systems in Austria and Croatia were praised: "Top hygiene values with completely free use", according to the ADAC.

Test winner comes from Austria

When the rest areas were tested, none of the companies tested received a "very good" rating. But 33 facilities received a "good" rating, 27 times the grade "sufficient" was given and five rest areas failed the test with the evaluation unsatisfactory. The loser in the test is the Ruma rest stop in Serbia on the A1 between Belgrade and Sid - it received a "poor" rating in the categories of traffic management, family friendliness and sanitary facilities.

The test victory went to the Wörthersee plant in Austria on the A 2 between Villach and Vienna. Here, the testers were impressed by the varied and appealingly presented and, above all, delicious food. There is also a safe and beautiful children's playground here,a children's play area and baby station indoors and well-kept sanitary facilities. (AG)
