VW hoped that the Chinese market would run differently than the rest of the car market. Now the hopes were even exceeded.

Volkswagen sold more cars than expected in China in the first quarter. With 284,143 cars, the increase was around six percent compared to the same period last year, as the company reported in Beijing on Tuesday. "The development of the entire passenger car market in the first quarter exceeded our expectations and we have successfully benefited from the growth trend," said Volkswagen's China boss Winfried Vahland. In March, more than 100,000 cars were sold for the first time this year. With 112,466 cars delivered to customers, it was the best sales month ever.

Less and yet more

Before the global economic crisis, the Chinese car market had grown strongly in the double-digit percentage range. Last month, Volkswagen said it expected to produce five percent more cars in its most important foreign market this year. When presenting the new figures for the first quarter, China boss Vahland said that Volkswagen wanted to continue to grow faster than the overall market and expand its market share this year. (dpa)
