Mercedes propagates the “cleanest diesel in the world”. In addition to the well-established particle filter, other catalysts reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.

Mercedes is launching a new generation of diesel engines. The E 320 Bluetec, initially only available in the USA, combines common rail engines with the latest exhaust technology. “Bluetec stands for the cleanest diesel car in the world”, says Rudolf Thom, Center Manager “Certification Environment and Regulatory Environment” of the Mercedes Car Group.
Two versions available
Bluetec is an exhaust gas cleaning system in two variations. In the first version, which will also work from October 15 in the E 320 Bluetec, which is only available in the USA, an Oxi-Kat and particle filter are combined with a particularly long-life NOx storage Kat and an additional SCR-Kat. This version works primarily in cars.
In the work process, internal engine measures make combustion as clean as possible, so that the lowest raw emissions enter the exhaust cycle from the outset. First of all, carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons (HC) are minimized in the oxidation catalytic converter and in the further developed DeNOx catalytic converter.
With or without additives

The particle filter then burns the soot particles almost completely. Only two percent of the particles reach the final SCR catalytic converter, in which the nitrogen oxides are significantly reduced. Nitrogen oxides are currently the only exhaust gas components that are higher in diesel engines than in Otto units. Thanks to Bluetec, stricter emission regulations are now also met.
In the second version, which already works in trucks and meets the Euro 5 standard coming from 2009, the system is combined with the SCR catalytic converter and the additive Adblue, an aqueous liquid. The additive is injected into the exhaust gas flow from a separate 20 liter tank. In the process, ammonia is released and converts around 80 percent of the nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water.
