The last model rolled off the assembly line at the Opel plant in Bochum on Friday. Now a difficult new beginning begins for the employees.
After the end of series production in the Opel plant in Bochum, almost 3,000 employees face a difficult new beginning. About 300 of the employees could find accommodation in the Opel spare parts warehouse, "but 2,700 have nothing," said Opel works council chief Rainer Einenkel on Monday after the last works meeting at the plant. In the region, more is being dismantled than built up. "If there is no work, the transfer company cannot mediate."
Einenkel called the decision to close the plant a "brutal, violent, primitive, vicious divorce". Opel closes the plant for capacity reasons at the end of the year. The last Opel from Bochum rolled off the assembly line last Friday. The ten-year struggle for the plant was worth it despite everything, said Einenkel. Without resistance, the plant would probably have closed much sooner.
Low-wage jobs are of little use
The Bochum Opel employees will hand in their factory ID cards this week. At the beginning of January they will then start in the transfer company for a maximum of two years as a rule. Many Opel employees felt that the end of the line was a “death blow”, said Einenkel. Many would have had tears in their eyes or hugged on Friday as the last Zafira was completed. “It was my family over the years,” said an employee at the works meeting. Now Opel should not be released from the responsibility to create new jobs in Bochum. Low-wage jobs and temporary jobs far away were of little use. Many Opel employees are firmly rooted in the region. "We'll have to see that the work comes here."
Opel has a 49 percent stake in the development company for the “Bochum Perspective 2022” location. The car manufacturer is also giving a total of around 17.5 million euros to the company, including a good four million euros as a loan. In the afternoon, a solidarity rally for the Opel employees was planned in downtown Bochum.
