At the moment, a fun car from Toyota, which is still very staid looking, is unthinkable. But a little speedster could appear as a cheap alternative to the planned comeback of the Celica.
Driving fun should again be a top priority at Toyota. With a rear-wheel drive small car coupé, the world market leader, who has recently been known for rather staid reason cars, wants to attract mainly young customers, reports the British magazine "Autocar". The plans for fun athletes are considered the favorite project and legacy of Toyota chief test driver Hiromu Naruse, who had a fatal accident in a Lexus super sports car near the Nürburgring in June.
Daihatsu engine
The GRMN Hot Hatch Concept study shown in Tokyo at the beginning of the year will form the basis for the nippy small car. The drive of the three-door, which weighs just under 1000 kilograms, is to be taken over by a 1.5-liter gasoline engine from subsidiary Daihatsu placed in the front. The price in Japan should only be around 12,000 euros. This would make the coupé an inexpensive alternative to the successor to the Toyota Celica expected in 2013. (mid)
