The Ingolstadt-based car manufacturer Audi reports record sales, sales and profits every month. But Rupert Stadler is still not satisfied.

After rapid growth rates in the first half of the year, the VW subsidiary Audi is bursting with self-confidence. "We are traveling at top speed for the twelfth record year in a row and are well on the way to becoming the most successful premium automobile manufacturer in the world by 2015," said Audi boss Rupert Stadler on Monday. In the first six months, the company achieved record sales, turnover and profit. The pre-tax result rose by 67 percent to 1.1 billion euros. Sales grew by almost 10 percent to 509,000 deliveries. In the second half of the year, the new A4 in particular should provide additional boost.

Excellent return on sales

Audi sales grew by a good 12 percent in the first half to 17.4 billion euros for the first time. Since the pre-tax result increased significantly more, the pre-tax return on sales - a highly regarded profitability indicator in the automotive industry - improved from 4.3 to 6.4 percent. “The key figures for the first half of the year impressively show what we mean by profitable growth,” said Stadler. In order to stay on the road to success in the future, Audi increased investments by a good seven percent to 892 million euros. Almost 90 percent of this was invested in the German locations.

In the first six months, the VW subsidiary achieved a delivery record in 41 markets worldwide. In the USA the increase in sales was 13 percent, in China just under 27 percent and in Europe 7.4 percent. In the difficult German home market, Audi was able to keep sales largely stable at 127,112 deliveries. The market share rose to 7.9 percent in the declining market. Last year it was 7.5 percent. The number of jobs in the group rose slightly to 52,753 jobs. The number of employees in the main plants in Ingolstadt (31,185) and Neckarsulm (13,255) was stable. (dpa)
