From September, Mercedes will again be represented with a coupe in the new S-Class. The CL previously celebrated its premiere at the Paris Motor Show.
Mercedes will provide the new S-Class with a coupé again in autumn. According to the automaker, the new CL celebrates its premiere at the Paris Motor Show in Stuttgart and will be available from dealers from September 30th. The prices start according to the information at 105,850 euros for the CL 500. The CL 600, which will only be available at the end of the year, will cost 149,640 euros according to Mercedes.
Bigger than its predecessor
Technically, the two-door model is almost entirely based on the new S-Class, but it has a different platform and therefore does not have the same dimensions. According to Mercedes, the wheelbase is 2.96 meters, the length 5.07, the width 1.87 and the height 1.42 meters. Compared to its predecessor, the CL has become somewhat larger. The trunk volume has grown by 40 to 490 liters.
Visually, the CL takes over the design line of the new S-Class and, according to head of design Peter Pfeiffer, continues the more than 50-year-old tradition of luxurious Mercedes coupés. There is again a radiator grille with wide slats and a large star, frameless, retractable side windows that are not interrupted by a B-pillar, and C-pillars tapering downwards.
Top model with V12 engine
Initially, the most powerful petrol engines in the S-Class will be used for the drive. An eight-cylinder engine with 285 kW / 388 hp works in the CL 500. It accelerates the Coupé to 100 kilometers per hour (km / h) in 5.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km / h. Mercedes indicates its consumption at 12.1 liters.
Above this is the V12 engine of the CL 600, which achieves 380 kW / 517 hp with the help of two turbochargers. This means that the Coupé reaches 100 km / h in 4.6 seconds. The top speed is also limited to 250 km / h. Consumption should be on average 14.3 liters.
Seven-stage automatic
According to Mercedes, the power is transmitted with a seven-speed automatic. Standard equipment includes air suspension, automatic air conditioning, the “Pre-Safe” predictive protection system and a sliding glass roof. Also on board is the “Intelligent Light System” introduced in the E-Class with special functions for the bi-xenon headlights and an operating system with controller on the center tunnel.
A night vision assistant and the “Pre-Safe” brake, which brakes automatically in the event of an impending collision if the driver does not react to warnings, are available at an additional cost. Shortly after the market launch, there will also be a new parking assistant that will measure whether the parking space is large enough as you drive past and then show the driver into the space.
