A danger that is often underestimated is posed by modern gasoline engines with direct injection. They are said to emit many harmful particles. Environmental associations are therefore once again calling for the introduction of a particulate filter for gasoline engines as well.

Up to seven times higher emissions than diesel

According to the Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), modern gasoline engines should produce large quantities of ultra-fine particles through direct injection. They significantly exceed the legal limits that apply to diesel cars. A petrol-powered BMW 1 Series, for example, is said to have exhibited up to seven times higher particle emissions in an independent measurement than is legally permitted for diesel cars. A VW Golf with a 1.2-liter TSI petrol engine also exceeds the limit value. This poses a major health risk: the particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and get into the bloodstream, causing diseases of the respiratory tract and the cardiovascular system.

The "new fine dust problem" should now also prove scientific findings from the Helmholtz Center Munich. Environmental associations such as the DUH and the Verkehrsclub von Deutschland (VCD) therefore see politics as an obligation. They should no longer allow themselves to be held back and softened by the automobile manufacturers and are calling for the rapid introduction of effective limit values for gasoline engines - and the associated particle filters for gasoline engines.
