The ADAC examined 101 rest areas in 16 European countries. The 20 places examined in Germany received bad grades, especially for safety.
As part of the EuroTest, the ADAC examined 101 rest areas in 16 countries along the motorways, 20 of them in Germany. The eleven “very good” places are exclusively abroad: five in Austria, three in Croatia and one each in Sweden, Italy and Hungary. German rest areas received consistently bad grades for safety. When it came to the cleanliness of the toilets, only around half could achieve a positive result. After all, there was eight “good” (40 percent) overall ratings among domestic systems, and only one system, Theilheim Nord on the Bavarian A3, scored “very poor”.
Insufficient lighting
The main problems with the German rest areas are that they are not adequately lit. Only one system (Dätgen A7) is really bright and can therefore also be used safely at night, another two (Binshof A61 and Sperbes A9) have at least mediocre illumination. The rest is partly in the dark or is only poorly lit around the toilet building. We do not have video surveillance that is often found in Austria.
There is also a lot of trouble with the cleanliness of the toilets. Here, the German parking lots confirm the European trend. Only in a quarter of all systems there was nothing to complain about in terms of hygiene. The testers found the dirtiest toilets in the Czech and Slovak Republics, as well as in Slovenia - where none of the systems came out beyond a "poor" rating.
Charming restaurant in Gaishorn
The test winner, the Gaishorn rest area on the Austrian A9 (Pyhrnautobahn) between Treglwang and Trieben, shows what an optimal rest area should look like in the opinion of the ADAC testers. The facility is not only well-kept and in a scenic location, equipped with picnic areas and a climbing garden. It also has very clean, handicapped accessible toilets with a changing room and shower. It is well lit at night and has video surveillance and an emergency call. (AG)
