With the end of the current five-car BMW, the fate of the M5 is sealed. The sporty variant will disappear from the range of offers for at least a year.

The sporty BMW subsidiary M GmbH is preparing the generation change for the M5. As managing director Kay Segeler confirmed at the celebration of the 25th birthday for the high-performance sedan at the Nürburgring, work on the new edition is in full swing. Because BMW is phasing out the current five-year-old at the end of the year and the successor is rolling out in spring, the 373 kW / 507 hp Kraftmeier is over for now.

Most successful generation

"Then there is an interruption in supply for at least a year," admitted Marketing Director Carsten Pries. With over 20,000 copies in five years, this fourth is also the most successful generation of the M5 to date. The manufacturer did not want to reveal many details about the successor. But M boss Segler has announced that the next M5 will emit at least 20 percent less CO2 than the current one, which is on the list with a consumption of 14.4 liters and CO2 emissions of 344 g / km.

With the five-liter V10 engine currently in use, that is difficult to do. With this, Segeler supports the rumors that the next M5 will again have a V8 engine that is charged with two turbos, similar to the X5M and X6M. Its 408 kW / 555 PS should therefore also be the benchmark for the new M5.

Extension downwards

With the new M5 and the M6 derived from it, M GmbH's program is not yet exhausted: At the moment there is little to be said for the sometimes rumored new edition of the M1 super sports car, which could compete against the Audi R8 and Mercedes SLS. "It is more likely that there will be a downward expansion," said Segeler, indicating a new entry-level model. According to information from company circles, this vehicle could come onto the market in 2011. (dpa / tmn)
