The previous Skoda boss Winfried Vahland will in future be in charge of Volkswagen's newly established North America market region. The VW Group announced this on Friday after the meeting of the Supervisory Board in Wolfsburg. Vahland's successor at Skoda is to be the previous head of sales at Porsche, Bernhard Maier.
As a consequence of the exhaust gas scandal, the US, Mexico and Canada markets are to be combined in the newly created North America region. The group expects this to "significantly strengthen" sales there. The US regional head of Volkswagen, Michael Horn, who was criticized as a result of the scandal, remains in office. On November 1st, Maier will take over the duties of Vahland, who had led the VW subsidiary to success there for five years.
Maier succeeds Vahland
"It was not an easy decision for me to take on a new role in the group after more than five eventful, successful and beautiful years," said Vahland. “Skoda is something very special. One of the main reasons for this is the large Skoda family and the strength and dynamism of the brand,”says Vahland.
Vahland, who was already responsible for VW's China business, led the brand to sales of over a million vehicles for the first time in history last year. In his new role, as of November 1, 2015, Vahland will be a member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management as well as President and CEO of the newly created Group region North America.
