The motorcycle market in Germany was slightly below the level of the previous year until May. In the first five months a total of more than 50,000 two-wheelers were sold.
The German motorcycle market is slightly below the previous year's level. According to the motorcycle association IVM, 50,309 new motorcycles were registered between January and May, 0.24 percent less than in the same period in 2011. Motor scooters increased by 4.22 percent to 5,179 new registrations.
Light motorcycles were less in demand: Here the number of new registrations fell by 11.11 percent to 5,118 vehicles. In the case of light scooters, a decrease of 5.25 percent to 10,434 units was recorded. A total of 71,040 motorized two-wheelers were newly registered over the course of the year, 2.16 percent fewer than a year earlier.
BMW Motorrad remains the leader
BMW remains the strongest manufacturer in the first five months with 12,095 new registrations. Compared to the same period of the previous year, this means a minus of 1.35 percent. However, due to the introduction of the two new maxi scooters C 600 sport and C 650 GT, the Munich-based company is expecting sales to rise in the coming months. Overall, the Munich-based company want to set a new record for sales this year.
