BMW Is Planning Motorcycles Below 500 Cc

BMW Motorrad also wants to offer machines below 500 ccm in the future. For this purpose, the manufacturer has entered into a cooperation with the Indian manufacturer TVS Motr Company.

BMW wants to boost its motorcycle business in cooperation with the Indian manufacturer TVS Motor Company. With TVS, the Munich-based company is planning small machines in the class below 500 cubic centimeters and is thus primarily focusing on young buyers. Both manufacturers are to later bring their own, slightly different models onto the market, but these were developed together.

"Against the background of changing motorcycle markets, demographic developments and increasing environmental requirements, we are expanding our product range in order to open up new growth potential for us," said BMW motorcycle boss Stephan Schaller.

First machines from 2015

It is not yet clear when exactly the first machines will be at the dealer's. At the earliest, the first products can be expected from 2015; BMW itself speaks of the second half of the decade. Although the machines are aimed at the booming markets in the emerging countries, they should also be available for purchase in core markets such as Germany.

In these countries in particular, BMW is also feeling headwinds in the two-wheeler business, because enthusiasm for motorcycles is noticeably dwindling, especially among new customers. BMW had already announced that it would realign its two-wheeler division and only recently separated from the off-road brand Husqvarna after unsuccessful attempts. (dpa)
