Volkswagen makes the third attempt to manufacture the one-liter car. The hybrid prototype can cover 35 kilometers without diesel.

Volkswagen is making a new attempt towards the one-liter car. Eight years after the first technology study and four years after the debut of the second research vehicle at the IAA auto show, the manufacturer is now showing the third prototype of an extremely economical vehicle. The two-seater called XL1 with an average consumption of 0.9 liters (CO2 emissions: 24 g / km) is as long and wide as a VW Polo, but comparatively flat. The vehicle will celebrate its world premiere at the Qatar Motor Show in Doha on the Persian Gulf (January 26-29). VW speaks of a "possible small series".

Very aerodynamic

VW calls the XL1 the “most efficient car in the world”. Its plug-in hybrid drive is extremely economical, its dolphin-inspired body shape is particularly aerodynamic (CW value: 0.186) and its weight is unusually low thanks to the use of carbon fiber. The car, which should offer 100 liters of trunk space, weighs 795 kilograms. This makes it more than a third lighter than a VW Golf.

The XL1 is powered by a two-cylinder diesel with a displacement of 0.8 liters and 35 kW / 48 PS, which is supported by an electric motor of 20 kW / 27 PS. Powered by a lithium-ion battery that can be recharged at any socket, the XL1 can travel up to 35 kilometers without diesel. If both engines work together, the prototype accelerates to 100 km / h in 11.9 seconds and reaches a maximum of 160 km / h, according to VW. (dpa)
