Volkswagen has adapted the Passat to the automotive needs in the USA. The American-made mid-range sedan will dash down the highways from August 2011.
Volkswagen enlarges the Passat for the USA. The mid-range vehicle, which was completely developed for the United States, has a length of 4.87 and, according to VW, will "start in the $ 20,000 class" from August. The Passat produced in the new US plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is intended to support the Jetta, which in the USA is the most successful car in America with German technology on board. The new Passat is celebrating its premiere at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), which opens its doors this Monday.
Basic version with 170 hp
But not only the size differs from the models of the "old world". Even the basic version houses a 125 kW / 170 hp, five-cylinder petrol engine under the bonnet. In addition, an economical clean diesel (TDI) with 103 kW / 140 PS and a six-cylinder petrol engine with 206 kW / 280 PS and dual clutch transmission (DSG) are available.
Volkswagen of America will offer the new model in the three equipment lines S, SE and SEL. A tire pressure monitoring system, the electronic stabilization program ESP, ABS with brake assist, hill start assist and six airbags are already included in the basic equipment. Also standard are electric windows, air conditioning, heat protection glazing, a classy analog clock in the center of the dashboard, cruise control, an outside temperature display with frost warning, a radio CD system (MP3-compatible, plus external audio input) and a Bluetooth hands-free system (with voice control). A special theft protection and a system to adapt the car to the sometimes extreme weather conditions before driving off can also be selected.
High demands
700,000 units were sold in the 23 years after the first Passat was introduced in the United States. In the next seven years, however, it is planned to sell one million vehicles. The Passat is intended to help ensure that 800,000 units will be sold annually in the USA alone by 2018, which should do their part to become the largest automobile manufacturer.
