Electric car maker Tesla is continuing its model offensive with an SUV. The Model X has an electric range of 400 kilometers.

Electric car maker Tesla has presented its latest model in California. The Model X SUV is the brand's third vehicle after the Roadster and Model S. The electric car always has four-wheel drive and a battery with a capacity of 90 kWh, which should be sufficient for a range of 400 kilometers.

The SUV with up to six or seven seats is apparently supposed to offer a performance similar to that of the luxury sedan Model S. Initially, Tesla hasonly the values for the two more powerful versions are disclosed. The Model X 90D has 190 kW / 259 PS, accelerates from standstill to 100 km / h in 4.8 seconds and drives at a maximum speed of 250 km / h. At the same top speed, the top model P90D accelerates from zero to 100 km / h in 3.2 seconds. The front engine has an output of 190 kW / 259 hp, the rear engine 370 kW / 503 hp.

Falcon wings as an eye-catcher

A special feature are the double doors, so-called “Falcon Wings”, through which the second and third row of seats can be reached particularly easily. They only need 30 centimeters of space on the side of the vehicle to open. At the same time, each door is equipped with sensors that recognize the environment and thus avoid unwanted contact - for example with other cars in a narrow parking space. The door opening is so large that parents can comfortably seat their children and buckle up their children without crouching, promises Tesla.

In addition, the Americans boast of having the largest windshield currently available, which is said to offer appropriate views for the driver and front passenger. The doors of the Model X should open and close automatically when the driver approaches the car. Inside, almost all of the controls work as before via the large touchscreen, while important functions are reflected in the instrument panel.

Low drag coefficient

At 0.24, the Model X has a very low drag coefficient, especially for an SUV. In addition, an active rear spoiler, which also houses the third brake light, ensures greater efficiency and stability. Camera, radar and sonar sensors continuously scan the environment and warn if there is a risk of collision; an emergency brake assistant, which also works at higher speeds, is also on board.

If you order now, your Model X will likely be delivered in the second half of 2016. The prices will be in the six-digit range. The Model S is quite successful in this country despite its relatively high price of at least 76,400 euros: by August 2015, Tesla had sold almost 1,000 Model S in Germany over the course of the year. That roughly corresponds to the size of an importer in the luxury niche like Lexus or Maserati. (SP-X)
