BMW will have the X1 manufactured in its plant in Leipzig. That said, Production Director Frank-Peter Arndt on the occasion of the expansion of the production site in the trade fair city.

The new BMW X1 model is being built in the car maker's Leipzig plant. This was announced by the BMW Group's production director, Frank-Peter Arndt, on Friday at the topping-out ceremony for the plant expansion in Leipzig. Arndt did not provide any further details regarding the start of production and market launch for the off-road vehicle. According to earlier information, the X1 should come onto the market in 2012 at the latest.

100 million euros invested

So far, four models - the 3-series sedan and three 1-series variants - have been manufactured in Leipzig. In the meantime, the construction of a press shop and a production building is proceeding at the Leipzig plant. 100 million euros will be invested in the expansion. "The press shop is a clear commitment to Germany and the Leipzig plant," said Arndt to journalists. It shows that the production of premium vehicles in Germany is possible.

So far, BMW has invested 1.2 billion euros in its Leipzig plant. Since production started in March 2005, around 400,000 vehicles have been manufactured here, up to 700 cars per day. 2,600 employees work directly at BMW. Together with service providers and suppliers on the factory premises, there are 5400 employees. In 2007 BMW increased its profit by nine percent to 3.13 billion euros and sold 1.5 million vehicles.
