The takeover of Porsche has led to unwanted competitive situations in the individual motorsport racing series at the Volkswagen Group. Wolfsburg is not only thinking about starting in Formula 1.
The Volkswagen Group is working on reorganizing its motorsport activities. There are plans to be taken seriously for a Formula 1 outing by Porsche or Audi, reports the "Financial Times Deutschland". The Volkswagen brand is considering a start in the US Nascar racing series and the World Rally Championship (WRC), the newspaper writes, citing company circles. A Porsche spokesman confirmed discussions about which brand should compete in which racing series in the future: "We are currently trying to work out a long-term strategy with the other brands."
Aiming for a quick decision
According to the "FTD", the Wolfsburg-based company is aiming for a quick decision. "It's time we found a solution," the paper quotes a company expert. At the beginning of November, the VW Board of Management met with Motorsport Director Kris Nissen to discuss future operations.
The realignment of motorsport has become necessary primarily due to the integration of the Porsche brand. Porsche boss Matthias Müller criticized the fact that in the legendary 24-hour race in Le Mans, private Porsche teams compete against Audi racing cars. "But we don't want to compete with each other. It's just not funny," Müller said a few days ago on the sidelines of the automobile show in Paris. "We therefore have to discuss whether it doesn't make more sense for one of the two brands to start in Le Mans and the other in Formula 1."
