The car manufacturer Daimler remains on the road to success. The Stuttgart-based company was able to increase sales by over 22 percent in August. In China there was even a three-digit growth. The Smart could not benefit from the good sales figures.

The Stuttgart car company Daimler sold more cars of the core brand Mercedes-Benz in August thanks to the high demand in China and Germany. Sales rose by more than 22 percent percent to 81,000 cars, as the company announced on Friday. The two-seater Smart, on the other hand, continues to weaken before its model refresh in autumn. Only 5,800 customers worldwide were enthusiastic about the Smart, 18 percent fewer than in August of the previous year.

Schmidt expects double-digit growth

Mercedes sales manager Joachim Schmidt expressed his confidence: "We are also anticipating continued positive development in the coming months and want to achieve double-digit growth worldwide with Mercedes-Benz in 2010 as a whole."

Overall, sales of the Mercedes-Benz Cars passenger car division, which also includes the AMG tuning brand and the Maybach luxury cars, were 18.5 percent up on the previous year at 86,800 cars in August. In the first eight months, Daimler sold 800,200 cars. This corresponds to an increase of 12.5 percent. The domestic market also developed positively. Contrary to the market trend in Germany of minus 27 percent, Mercedes-Benz was able to achieve an increase of 17 percent. A total of 15,800 vehicles were handed over to customers; in the previous year there were 13,500 cars.

China remains the guarantee for the further increase in sales. Mercedes-Benz was able to more than double its sales here and, with 13,400 (previous year 6300) cars delivered, achieved an increase of 113 percent. (AG / dpa)
