At the same time as the summer holidays, the prices at the petrol stations are rising again. In order to still have some money available at the holiday destination, a few tips should be observed.
In order to avoid high fuel prices at the beginning of the summer vacation, drivers should tactically refuel. If you want to go on vacation by car, it is best to fill up the tank before next Wednesday, when the first of five federal states in Germany get school holidays. This is the advice of the Auto Club Europa (ACE) in Stuttgart. According to ACE spokesman Rainer Hillgärtner, it is to be feared that the oil companies will “strike again” at the start of the holiday season. Experience has shown that companies like to take advantage of such dates to raise prices because a particularly large number of drivers are then on the road.
Only refuel after the border
“Consumers have to counter this as far as they can,” says Hillgärtner. This also includes refueling not at the more expensive branded petrol stations, but generally at cheaper free ones. If you live in southern Germany and want to go on vacation to Italy, you should also keep an eye on the level of fuel prices abroad. According to ACE information, a liter of super currently costs an average of EUR 1.350 in Germany - in Austria it is only EUR 1.103. If the route allows, drivers should therefore only refuel after the border and take the savings with them.
The petrol pumps at motorway rest stops are also better to avoid, as the operators often add two cents per liter. According to Hillgärtner, an alternative is a refueling stop at a truck stop or at a gas station in a city near the motorway. (dpa / tmn)
