In addition to the K 1600, BMW is also waiting for further innovations in the coming motorcycle season. Not only does the 650 GS come onto the market, but also the revised R 1200 R.

In the 2011 motorcycle season, BMW is not only relying on innovations such as the six-cylinder models K 1600 GT and K 1600 GTL, but is also continuing a long tradition with the revised R 1200 R and the R 1200 R Classic. In addition, the GS family has been expanded with the G 650 GS. The prices for the new products from Munich are not yet known. The bikes will be available from dealers in spring 2011.

While the R 1200 R Classic and the R 1200 R are visibly different, they combine the same technology. Both are powered by the 1,170 cc boxer engine, which already does a great job in the R 1200 GS and R 1200 RT with 81 kW / 110 hp at 7,750 rpm and a maximum torque of 119 Nm at 6,000 tours. It should provide more roadster enjoyment on country roads than before. The electronically controlled exhaust flap should provide the matching powerful sound.

In both R models, the engine was embedded in the proven, two-part main / rear frame. For the front wheel guidance, the R 1200 R has been given a newly built fork which, with its standpipe that has grown by six millimeters to 41 millimeters in diameter, has a decisive influence on the appearance of the bike. The proven single-sided swing arm takes over the rear wheel guidance.

Optional with ESA

Both the R and the R Classic can be optionally equipped with the electronic suspension adjustment ESA. The spring base and the rebound and compression stages of the damping can be set on the rear wheel, the rebound stage damping on the front wheel. This increases comfort depending on the road surface. Integral ABS, which can be combined with the optional ASC automatic stability control, is also part of the special and not standard equipment.

Visually, the two models do not differ fundamentally, but only in a few striking points. While the R has a sporty and modern design with its light alloy cast wheels, the R Classic - as the name suggests - relies on a classic design, for example in the form of wire-spoke wheels or the paintwork in sapphire black metallic with a central stripe in alpine white.

For bikers who like to ride off the beaten track every now and then, BMW is offering the new G 650 GS for the coming season. The slim enduro with the asymmetrical headlight is powered by the single-cylinder engine known from the F 650 GS with 35 kW / 48 hp at 6,500 tours. From its displacement of 652 ccm, the engine draws a maximum torque of 60 Nm at 5,000 rpm. A top speed of 170 km / h should be possible. A power reduction to 25 kW / 34 PS at 6,500 rpm and 47 Nm torque at 4,500 tours is optionally available. The top speed is reduced to 145 km / h.

The GS is ideal for beginners and short-legged riders thanks to the powerful motor in combination with the very low weight of 223 kilograms and the low seat height of 78 centimeters. According to the Bavarians, the chassis of the new G 650 GS was developed with a focus on country roads. A chassis with a tubular steel bridge frame and a bolted rear frame is used. The front wheel guidance is taken over by a torsion-resistant telescopic fork, at the rear a two-arm swing arm made of square steel profiles works in conjunction with a central spring strut linked via a lever system. In addition to the classic brake system with one disc brake at the front and rear, ABS can be ordered as an option, which can be switched off for off-road use. (mid)
