With 2,166,852 new registrations in the first nine months of this year, the KBA registration statistics recorded a drop of 27.6 percent compared to the same period last year. VW remains the market leader with a market share of almost 22 percent.

In September of this year, a total of 259,748 cars were newly registered in Germany. That is 17.8 percent less than in the same month of the previous year, when the new car market experienced a real boom as a result of the scrapping bonus. More than every fifth car registered on German roads for the first time in September was a VW with 21.1 percent, followed by Mercedes with 10.8 percent and BMW / Mini with 8.3 percent market share. This comes from the current registration statistics of the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).

Mercedes, BMW, Audi in the squares

A trend that is also reflected over the current year. However: For the first nine months of this year, the now published statistics show 2,166,852 newly registered vehicles, a drop of 27.6 percent compared to the same period last year. The lion's share, namely 21.7 percent, of all new registrations in this period, with 469,382 units, were made by the VW brand.

Mercedes with 9.4 percent or 204,711 newly registered vehicles and BMW with 9.0 percent or 194,915 new registrations since the beginning of the year also recorded almost double-digit market shares up to and including September. On the other places are Audi with 161,411 new registrations and Ford with 148,188 newly registered cars.

Luxury sector attracts

Contrary to the downward trend compared to the previous year due to the scrapping bonus, it was above all the manufacturers of high-priced sports and off-road vehicles that scored points in the first nine months of this year. This suggests that purchasing power is picking up again in the luxury sector too. For example, Land Rover was able, contrary to the industry trend, to increase its car sales from January to September 2010 by almost a third compared to the same period in the previous year to 5020 new registrations.

The sports car manufacturer Porsche is not losing ground either, with 11,752 new registrations in the same period of time, which is roughly the same as last year. (mid)
