The car continues to dominate personal mobility. But the Germans are increasingly using alternatives. For the first time, the number of so-called passenger kilometers fell again.

Germans are increasingly leaving their cars behind and are increasingly using public transport. For the first time since 2003, the number of kilometers covered by cars or motorcycles fell again last year. This is what the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) reported. For the past year it was 869.6 billion kilometers. This value, known as passenger kilometers, was 883.4 billion kilometers in 2007.

More often by bus and train

In return, more and more people are using public transport and are thus covering increasingly longer distances. On average, every German traveled around 2,000 kilometers by bus or train in the past year - that's roughly the distance between Hamburg and Istanbul or Munich and Moscow. The railways accounted for a good half of this. Almost 40 percent were covered in buses, trams made up about every tenth kilometer.

Private transport dominates

The number of person-kilometers on public transport grew again last year and is now 162.2 billion. Despite continuous growth, public transport still ranks far behind private transport for cars and bikers: the ratio is around one to five. For longer distances, the airplane is increasingly an alternative. While the person-kilometers in the air were only 48.4 billion in 2004, in 2008 they had already reached a good 60 billion.
