The wave of warning strikes in the European Opel plants is expanding. Now there are also protests in Sweden against the proposed closure of the plant in Lisbon.
The wave of warning strikes in European Opel plants against the austerity policy of the US parent company GM has now also caught the Swedish Saab subsidiary: In three Saab production sites across the country, workers temporarily stopped work on Monday in solidarity to attend union rallies against the planned closure of one Protest Opel factory near Lisbon, union leaders told the Swedish media. Officially, the meetings were passed off as regular information events for the trade unions.
18 actions planned
In addition to the Saab plant in Trollhättan in southwest Sweden, workers in the transmission production in Gothenburg and in the engine factory in Södertälje south of Stockholm were temporarily on strike. The European unions are angry that GM is refusing to discuss future production plans, said Trollhättan union leader Paul Akerlund.
In protest against further job cuts and the threat of plant closings, a total of 18 protest actions against GM are to be organized across Europe this week. Trade unionists assume that a new production facility in Russia will be built to replace the combo plant near Lisbon.
