Toyota faces a maximum fine in the USA because it has not complied with the information obligation. It won't be the last in the States.
The US government plans to impose a civil penalty of $ 16.4 million on Japanese automaker Toyota for failing to inform them in time of the jammed accelerator problem. Transport Minister Ray LaHood announced on Monday in Washington. It is the highest civil penalty possible under applicable US law and also the highest that the US Road Safety Authority (NHTSA) has ever required from an automaker.
Further penalties are possible
Toyota had already known about the dangerous defect and the potential risk for four months before the relevant US authorities were informed, LaHood said. According to the law, the company had to comply with its information obligation within five working days. At the end of January, 2.3 million vehicles were recalled to the workshops because of the problem in the USA.
Toyota now has two weeks to respond to the request. The NHTSA also indicated that Toyota could face further penalties. The current action is specifically about the jammed pedals, it was emphasized in the written declaration, and it is currently being investigated whether there are any further violations. (dpa)
