In 1991 the first AMI began under the motto “Auto 91… but sure”with 120,000 visitors. For the 20th edition, three times as many guests are expected who are particularly attracted by the unique concept of the interactive fair.
From Saturday it will be that time again: The American will open its doors for nine days and attract around 300,000 visitors to the five halls with numerous premieres as well as three world premieres by German manufacturers. But just like the cars, the join-in program, which puts a unique stamp on the AMI, is now also attractive.
Last time every year
Even if the anniversary fair is the last one to bury the annual rhythm, the AMI has earned a place in the trade fair world over the past 18 years. In 1991, 120,000 visitors made the pilgrimage to the then still regional manufacturers' fair “Auto 91… but safe”, which at that time was still held in the south-east of Leipzig.
Due to the unique concept as a hands-on and consumer fair, the regional car show became more and more a competitor for the established events in Frankfurt, Berlin or Stuttgart. In addition to the increasing number of visitors, the number of exhibitors also increased, who also had to adjust to the "new" audience.
Between celebrity sofa and fuel-saving lesson
Because in addition to the premieres of racing cars and everyday vehicles, the AMI lives from its participatory character. The special exhibitions in the glass hall, the fuel-saving hour of individual manufacturers or the celebrity sofa as well as the individual days of action for taxi drivers or young professionals are already traditional. This year, hobby tradespeople can even be part of the live installation of a complete multimedia system in a Ford Mustang.
For the first time there is a challenging SUV course under the motto "City Experience", in which the Skoda Yeti, Subaru Forrester, VW Touareg or BMW X6 have to cover a route with bumpy roads, inclines, stairs, narrow bridges, seesaws and all sorts of others mastering impassable barriers. And the little ones don't miss out either. On April 18, children between four and nine will determine the winner of the Bobby Car Challenge in two age groups.
Expand as a competence location
Just like the programs for visitors, the AMITEC and AMICOM trade fairs attract a specialist audience. "We want to further develop Leipzig as a competence location for automotive topics and offer the specialist audience even more value," says project director Matthias Kober, describing the requirements of the accompanying specialist events.
AMI also wants to continue to develop into a competence location. Even if other trade fairs have more visitors and even if after April 18, when the gates close at 6 p.m. on the last day, you have to wait two years for the next AMI: a car fair you can touch, like at the AMI otherwise not. (AG / TF)
