Winter is already over, but the danger of slipping is not off the road yet. The spring rain holds many surprises in store for those who do not concentrate.
German roads are not only threatened with slipperiness in winter. The spring rain can also turn the road into a slide; the greater the amount of water, the greater the risk of aquaplaning. A real "wedge" of non-displaced water forms in front of the tire. As a result, the car loses contact with the ground and in extreme cases becomes impossible to steer.
Adapted speed and sufficient profile
This can be prevented by adjusting the speed and using tires with a sufficient profile. According to the rain tire specialist Uniroyal, modern tires are designed in such a way that they can displace more than 40 liters of water per second from the road at 100 km / h. This corresponds to around 15 bathtub fillings per minute. This explains why worn tires float up with far less water and significantly lower speeds and thus become undirectable.
Anyone who gets into an aquaplaning situation despite all caution should keep calm and take their foot off the gas immediately when the clutch is depressed. The steering wheel must be kept straight until the tires are in contact with the road again. (mid)
