Within five years, the price of a small car has increased by an average of around 1,000 euros. Increasingly, premium is also being offered in the lowest segments and is driving prices up.

According to a study, mini and small cars are becoming more and more expensive. In the small car segment, which includes the VW Polo, for example, car buyers have to shell out an average of 14,126 euros - five years ago it was 13,201 euros. This was the result of calculations by the Center Automotive Research (CAR) at the University of Duisburg-Essen, which are available to the dpa.

Blatant price differences among dealers

"The prices run away from the customers and the car dealers find it difficult to find young buyers in difficult times," commented CAR Director Ferdinand Dudenhöffer on the results. Mini vehicles (example: Ford Ka) now cost an average of 11,069 euros (2007: 10,020 euros).

What is noticeable and partly responsible for the trend is above all the spread of the segments: Even with small cars, there are now cheap and premium suppliers Partly blatant price differences. The cheapest version of the Dacia Sandero costs 6990 euros, stressed Dudenhöffer. A mini convertible from BMW, on the other hand, costs 32,150 euros - without any additional equipment. (dpa / tmn)
