The Association of the Automotive Industry has revised its pessimistic sales forecast for this year. In view of the scrapping premium, even the three million mark is possible.
Thanks to the scrapping bonus, the auto industry wants to sell more than three million new cars in Germany in the dramatic crisis year of 2009. "I believe that there is a chance that we can crack the 3 million mark," said the President of the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), Matthias Wissmann, in Berlin on Wednesday. The VDA had previously named a corridor of 2.7 to 2.9 million vehicles. In 2008 it was just over 3 million.
«Most difficult year»
The scrappage bonus of 2500 euros is a "good bridge" until the global demand for cars may pick up again in 2010/11. But the premium alone could not save the industry. "2009 will be the most difficult year the auto industry has experienced since World War II," said Wissmann. Basically, he spoke out against state holdings in industrial groups. He did not want to comment on the situation of individual companies such as Schaeffler and Opel.
Wissmann welcomed signals from France that they were withdrawing from the protective rules for the domestic auto industry. The clause that companies are not allowed to close a plant in France for the term of low-interest government loans is to be deleted. There has not yet been an official confirmation of this. "We hope that the French government is now backtracking," said Wissmann. German suppliers exported car parts worth 4.5 billion euros to France every year. The isolation of national markets would be "a difficult own goal". (Dpa)
